Lockdown has been a strange phenomenon this year but many of you budding authors have taken the time to write a book. Well done you if you are one of them. Here at Forward Thinking Publishing we have been really busy keeping up with you all.

What next?

You may now have a manuscript on your laptop and have no idea what to do next. The next stages are very important and if you skip a stage then it can be costly in the long run. Here is what to do next:-

  1. Seek out a really good editor to have a look and to comment on any changes. When we look at manuscripts one of the issues we believe authors struggle with is with the structure. Therefore, a good editor will look at your manuscript with the eyes of the reader and this is valuable information. Sometimes as an author you can be too close to it.
  2. Seek out a good proof-reader. Many authors skip these two stages because their friends have read their manuscript and that is good enough. It isn’t! This is part of the publishing process so don’t scrimp and save on these two important steps.
  3. Cover design – make sure it represents your genre. Again, don’t scrimp on this stage as it is true that people judge a book by its cover.
  4. Self-publish. This can be tricky so get good advice on what platforms are best to put your book. It took the director of Forward Thinking Publishing 2 years to work out the best route. Forward Thinking Publishing are not fans of Amazon but there are other options available to you.

Producing a great quality book is done in stages and if you miss out critical stages then your book will be mediocre so don’t let that happen to you.
