When I’m out networking a lot of people ask me – “Can I write a book?”. They don’t worry about the time that it will take them, they worry about whether they can write, whether their English is good and will people read it. It is their own fear of inadequacy that is holding them back from writing a book.
As an editor and publisher when I speak to potential writers It is never about the writing, but they worry that they don’t have anything to say, that no-one will ever listen to them.
If you ever find yourself asking yourself this question then it is the wrong question to ask. What you really need to ask yourself is “Have you got a voice?”

Have you got anything to share?
If the answer if yes, then you can write. I always say that the writing is super easy, it is not about writing in perfect English, not about having the right commas and full stops in the right places but it is about what you are trying to convey to the writer.
As an editor one of the things that I look for in a manuscript is a voice. This is very important especially when writing non-fiction and in particular if you want to upsell your coaching services. The voice has got to be one of the main things that you focus on.
Do you speak perfect English?
No, I certainly don’t. I have a voice which is different. I could write the same book as you but it won’t be the same, it will be completely different because we both have different voices. When I coached people I had a particular style in which I spoke, in which clients related to me. When I wrote my first book, Kick Ass your Life, the number one comment that I received from existing clients was, “I could hear your voice, it felt like you were speaking to me.”
This is one of the comments that was humbling to hear and inspired me to write more. It was a great feeling that my clients understood me, they weren’t worried that it wasn’t perfect English. Especially when you are coaching and you want to increase your business, then this is so important to master. You will be able to gain the trust of the reader and potential client which will help you upselling additional services from your book.
Therefore, don’t worry about perfect English. You can write if you have a voice. Expressing your voice is, of course, different but if you want to write a book then just open your computer and start.
